The featured speaker for this webcast is Dr. Jerry L. Hefner, Partner, at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP. Hefner will discuss crucial information surrounding protecting your company’s IP in China.

China has recently made significant advancements in providing applicants with cost effective means for both securing and enforcing IP rights.

“If you’re even thinking about bringing your design to China, this webinar is a can’t miss event,” stated Rich Nass, Director of Content at UBM Canon and moderator for the webcast. “While the potential of producing a medical device in China comes with obvious benefits, it also has challenges that are just as obvious. During this webcast, we will cover vital information and explain realistic ways to secure and enforce your company’s IP in China. Plus, there will be a live Q&A with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.”

The webcast will take place on Tuesday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. CT (2:00 p.m. ET).  There is a minimal registration fee to attend.  The event will also be available archived for six months on the MD+DI website and in the Qmed webcast archive.

Sustainability shown as a driving factor in packaging decisions

Exclusive annual study by the leading authority Packaging Digest reveals top priorities for the packaging industry.
- Procter & Gamble and Walmart recognized for their sustainability practices

OAK BROOK, IL (November  1, 2011) ─ For the last five years, an exclusive annual study by  the global authority Packaging Digest, a leading media brand of UBM Canon,  and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition has shown sustainability’s steady growth as a driver of change and innovation in the packaging sector. New data from the just-released 2011 survey indicate that this momentum might be slowing.

The exclusive “Sustainability in Packaging” study - the longest-running benchmarking survey on this topic in the industry-indicates some slippage on key questions, according to John Kalkowski, Packaging Digest editorial director. He explains that this does not mean that sustainability’s importance among packagers has declined. Rather, its impact is still growing, although at a slightly slower pace.

The 2011 survey was conducted in September, drawing 674 responses from a cross section of the packaging industry that includes consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs), retailers, packaging services and converters, as well as machinery and materials suppliers.

”Packaging affects so many aspects of consumers’ lives and business. While it protects the investment in products, it also has a major impact on the environment through the use of materials, energy and the creation of waste,” says Anne Johnson, director of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. “Packaging Digest and the SPC launched this survey five years ago because we recognized that the packaging industry was going through tremendous changes as a result of increasing concerns about sustainability across society. This annual study is one of the best benchmarks of how the packaging segment has changed each year and an excellent indicator of sustainability issues that are on the horizon.”

Kalkowski points out that packaging accounts for one of the largest employment sectors across all U.S. manufacturing. “At the same time, packaging is used and thrown away each day by virtually all consumers, making it an obvious target to control through sustainable activities,” he says.

Major findings from the study include:

• The number of respondents reporting high or moderate familiarity with the issues of sustainability dipped to 80 percent in 2011 versus 83 percent in the 2010 survey, still well above the 52 percent at the same level of familiarity in 2007, the first year the survey was conducted.

• A growing number of study participants (41 percent) say the emphasis on sustainability within their companies has stayed the same in the past year, compared to 31 percent a year ago, while 55 percent said the emphasis had grown within their company in 2011.

• When asked how they’d rate their company’s success in achieving sustainability, less than one quarter of respondents say the business they work for had achieved levels beyond similar companies.

• Consumer demand, pricing pressure and retailer/brand owner requirements were cited most often as the main influences on companies’ sustainable packaging efforts.

• Economic conditions were cited as a major reason that some businesses have scaled back their activities in sustainable packaging.

Again in 2011, study participants identify Walmart as the leader among retailers for its sustainability practices, followed by Target and Whole Foods Markets. Among consumer product goods companies, Procter & Gamble was most-recognized for sustainability, followed by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, which both introduced plant-based packaging in 2011.

Further details of the study are available in the November issue of Packaging Digest at www.packagingdigest.com/SustainableSurvey. Complete results will be presented in a webcast at 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. The webcast also will feature a presentation on how Kraft Foods is leveraging sustainability in its business by Roger Zellner, director of sustainability research, development and quality for Kraft Foods and a state-of-sustainability report by Anne Johnson of the SPC.

Hypertronics Partners with UBM Canon, the Leading Global Medical Device Industry Source, to Co-Host Strategies for Avoiding Device Failure Seminar

Seminar headlined by industry expert Robert Hult, of Bishop & Associate will be co-located during the MD&M show in Minneapolis, November 2-3, 2011

Los Angeles, CA (October 27, 2011) - Hypertronics and UBM Canon’s Medical Device Media Group will co-host a seminar that aims to teach designers about the art of component selection in an advanced medical system. Dubbed, Strategies for Avoiding Device Failure, the seminar will be led by industry expert Robert Hult. As the Director of Product Technology for Bishop & Associates, Hult has nearly 40 years experience in the connector industry, with stops at Foxconn, Intel, and Tyco Electronics.

Hult’s presentation will look at making safe, dependable choices when it comes to component selection. This fits well with Hypertronics’ strategy, a company that is well respected for being a global supplier of high reliability, high performance interconnect solutions.

As most design engineers are aware, there are many potential points of failure on an advanced medical system. Hult will point out the obvious and not-so-obvious trouble spots, as well as their causes, and what you can do to avoid them. Devices covered in the discussion will include MRI, digital imaging, ultrasound, electrophysiology catheters, defibrillators, patient monitoring equipment, and implantable devices. One particular area of focus will be the interconnect system. Ample time will be allowed for Q&A and networking.

“I’m really excited to hear what Robert has to say. He’s a veteran that has been in the trenches when it comes to advanced system design,” said Rich Nass, Director of Content for UBM Canon’s Medical Devices Group. “When you’re designing products that save people’s lives, the mantra is that it has to work right all the time, every time.”

“We look forward to partnering with Hypertronics on this custom event,” said Shannon E. Alo-Mendosa, Director of Sales, UBM Canon’s Medical Device Media Group. “As the market leader, we anticipate partnering and executing more marketing services programs such as custom products and solutions in the future.  Especially as our customer’s/partner’s needs are focused more on engagement with a targeted audience  - we can apply our powerful content, unsurpassed brand equity and audience reach across the medical device industry, manufacturers, suppliers and OEMs, and in essence provide turnkey marketing services capabilities with a consultative media sales process.”

“We are delighted to participate in this event,” stated Vadim Radunsky, President, Hypertronics Corporation. “We view this venue as one that serves Hypertronics and its customers well across multiple disciplines within medical device manufacturing as it enables us to connect with the global community, build brand awareness and engage with our target audience.”
